Love in the Dark

I feel the pressing in, the steeping

Of the morning dark’s keeping

Like the density of Love

Intensifies, wrapping me with fur

& breath of puppy, peeping

Between my feet, four new paws

Just the two of us here

in the early dark, creeping

At the door, pulling open to let it all in

The morning dark folding over us

Like a blanket of gratitude

For restorative sleeping,

the morning dark deepening in us

Like a quickening, kicking within

For the awakening, sweeping

of new Love in the dark

Reminding me of my newborn time

With the teen inside, still sleeping

Just the two of us then

in the midnight nursing, primal feeding,

Love in the dark, weeping

The daughter who would stay alive

Her breath keeping…

She’s taller than me now

Last night in the dark,

car keys in HER hands, dangling

She initiated the embrace

Taking up the keeping of me

knowing the leaving—

the unspoken tsunami now sweeping

Across our ocean on slow roll

towards graduation,

towards the great leaping

The density of Love intensifies

Wrapping me with long hair &

smell of teen skin, with her leaning

I feel the pressing in, the steeping

Love in the Dark
