Forest Haiku

If the trees could speak

As they often do

with their vertical chants

and their lyrical limbs

They would sing for love

Into the hearts of sky

If the trees could speak

As they often do

With their mysterious beat

In their roots underground

They would whisper for love

Into the ears of earth

If the trees could speak

As they persist in silence

They would repeat

The echos of love over

The skin of all who pass through

If the trees could speak

As they persist in strength

They would release

Any hate held

in the underbelly of fear

As hate is too great

a burden to bear**

The trees,

in song, in beats,

in silence, in strength

they always do speak

If only we are quiet enough

to hear them—

to hear their rings of Truth

in our mysterious hearts

In the forest behind my home a mysterious neighbor posts a new haiku every few weeks, they always make me pause, reflect and take something new with me on my forest walks. Grateful.

**here today the forest echos MLK
