Seismologists
Seismologists speak without absolutes,
Listening to the vibrations of earth rock
Skateboarders drum on the infinite,
Shifting texture of landscape
Zebras migrate on the contrails of
Wildebeests superior listening,
All drumming their hooves in cacophony
Frogs evolved the first listening
ears to hear Mother Earth’s song,
within folds of their skin
Creating possibility of sound
here, today in my eardrum
hearing Nature’s chameleon
I am unqualified to write a symphony
Yet one is continually playing
in my bones—
Whether my instruments
can detect it or not,
My hope is that they listen
like sand on a drum
Creating exquisite patterns of response
The same infinite patterns
playing in you, waving the ocean,
fluttering through all the leaves—
May we ALL become seismologists
of Divine Creativity
May we listen with our heart’s drum
