More Colors

I want more colors to paint my words

I want more choices to drip

and dilute my prose,

I want to add black

into 50 shades of confusion

I want to mix in white

to create a dozen tints of longing

Please give me paste and sand

to thicken my prayers

and texture my grief

Please give me oil and water

to make my words of love slick & shimmery

So that they trickle and seep

into all the cracks,

sweeping around corners

Traveling to where they are needed

I want more metallic colors

to speak to universal uncertainty

and sparkles for the ineffable

experiences of being alive

As if I could sprinkle color

like sugar glitter onto cupcakes*

and you then could taste what I feel inside

I want more colors to paint my words

Purpling them to dissolve time

Greening them,

allowing them to grow & change

as once I have put them down,

I have changed

Please may I smear, swirl, swish, shimmer

shine, shadow, shush and shout

My poems…

Or perhaps they need to be sung

until they become silent in my bones

**inspired by the cupcakes we make this week to celebrate/honor the birthdays of one daughter who gallops on this earth 🐎 and one daughter who soars in the cosmos🦋
