Everything Bacon++

“Everything tastes better with bacon”…

My sisters and I agreed growing up

With the savory elevation

of our family’s menu of week

The menu of every week

Scripted & served on schedule

Mondays:oatmeal

Wednesdays:eggnog

Fridays: soft boiled egg on toast

Yet Saturdays! always pancakes with bacon!

The electric frying pan sat on the counter

next to the electric coils of the range

to expand the frying surface

for our family of six

The inflexibility of what & when we would eat

created certainty and predictability

that was both comforting & oppressive

The fixed menu

For my mother—survival & safety

in a chaotic world

For our tummies—never hungry,

yet never our choices

I would continue to agree with my sisters

“everything tastes better with bacon”

Even as a teenage athlete

When I refused to eat bacon or any meat

& a growing list of “unhealthy” foods

in my own form of creating choice & control

in a chaotic world

Even now I might still agree with them

as an eco-spiritual plant-based eater

as what we eat**

why we eat

And how we eat

is a complicated interdependent mix

of unique personal stories, access & choices

and universal planetary needs

Blessed be the sacred diversity of aliveness

May we live and love our way

into a sustainable future for all

** What we eat is one of the biggest contributors to our individual carbon footprint, and going vegan can ease our diet's burden on the planet. In fact, a study from Oxford University identified going vegan as the “single biggest way” we can reduce our carbon footprint, shrinking it up to 73%. A plant based diet can support awakening compassion to all beings and our spiritual connection to our interdependent Web-of-Life

++for the vegan curious…Veganuary supports those interested in experimenting with eating plant based and offers a FREE 31day vegan challenge each January. (Can also do any month)
